Very cool design! I will probably get one once it is commercially available.
But I might suggest using another mechanical connection instead of magnectic connection at the handphone units. There are two reasons.

1.Metallic shells will probaly be used to make the magnectic connection more efficient, but these shells may lead to the magnets inside the headphone units repel each other as they are placed at the direction indicated.
2.The magnetic field might interference the EM field while the headphones are operating and thus lower the audio quality.

Anyway, I am quite looking forward to it

Yes percychang, we could just get a straight-line result if we used infrared. Plus, infrared is directional, which means the user might need to adjust the emitter and reciever's angles on his/her two fingers to get it work properly. This could be an annoying problem on the usability.

Bluetooth might be a better replacement for infrared. The distance is determined through the decay of signal. However, it is till not practical on a daily tool like this, since battery is required. And with battery, you have to think about recharge and disposal.

In fact, the goal of this project is to design an affordable and easy-to-carry unversial measuring tool. I believe in this design the most important point for a blind person is the tactile feedback, which is direct and intuitive. That is why I decided to go low-tech and play with a rainbow thread:-)

Thanks for the comments buddies.

There is no need of a strong magnet to get those two buds stay together. Hence the week constant magnet field might not penetrate the head deeply.

I've done a few research on this. Scientists have only found out that it is POSSIBLE to get harmed if a person is exposed for a long period of time under a STRONG dynamic electromagnetic field, in which the electromagnetic directions is changing constantly. Below is the link for the research done by WHO:
